"...this strange eventful history..." - Jaques, As You Like It II.7.1062
We at Bare Bones Shakespeare believe in making strides into the future by taking inspiration from the past. On this page, you'll find a brief glance through our own past, which we always seek to better with every new production.

One-Woman Henry V at FW Fringe, September 9-11, 2023Henry the Fifth has a problem. She wants to re-take the French lands traditionally owned by England, but as a young king (with a famously misspent youth), no one will take her seriously. In this gender-wacky one-woman cut of William Shakespeare's famous play Henry the Fifth, Julia Gayden Nelson's HV will have audiences laughing and crying as she tries to take over France with nothing but her charisma, her audience, and... her cell phone.

Julius Caesar Tour, April-July 20225 actors and 3 audience plants make this touring production one of our most special yet. Not only does the fast-paced 60 minute cut keep audiences on the edge of their seats, but this production is part of a true scholarly experiment on audience interaction. Shakespeare lived and died almost 200 years before the first proscenium arch was introduced to the British Isles, so he doesn't just break the fourth wall -- there was no fourth wall to break! All of the action is designed to take place smack in the middle of a loud, rowdy, involved audience. That's exactly what we're studying: ways to make the audience shout along with the actors, until they're so invested that they become complicit in the murder of Caesar and everything that happens afterwards.

Taming of the DudeFeisty Kit is having trouble finding a wife, because everyone thinks he's too much of, well, a DUDE. Finally the charismatic Patricia agrees to marry him -- why, for love, or for his fortune? But marriage is hardly what Kit imagined, as Patricia quickly becomes manipulative and abusive. Bare Bones Shakespeare turns this popular play on its head and asks the audience hard questions about domestic abuse. What does reversing the genders expose about this common and tragic relationship dynamic? Do we have a double standard about gendered violence?
For this play, Bare Bones Shakespeare partnered with The Family Place, one of the few domestic violence survivor shelters that take in battered men as well as women. Their 24-hour hotline is 214-941-1991 |

Richard III by William ShakespeareJuly 6-15 2017 at Rover Dramawerks
Into a kingdom of turmoil, a kingdom where the rich are constantly enhancing themselves and the rest languish in poverty, a kingdom that has never been as politically divided between two sides as it is now, comes Richard of Gloucester. To some he is the one honest politician on the hill, the only man in the royal family willing to drain the swamp and tell it like it is. What he really is is a sociopath. A morally bankrupt, social media obsessed tyrant willing to lie, betray, and slaughter children, all to get what he truly wants: The crown. Read the review written by Charlie Bowles for John Garcia's THE COLUMN. |
